About this product

Product Information

Fifth Business Ramsay is a man twice born, a man who has returned from the hell of the battle-grave at Passchendaele in World War I decorated with the Victoria Cross and destined to be caught in a no man's land where memory, history, and myth collide. As Ramsay tells his story, it begins to seem that from boyhood, he has exerted a perhaps mystical, perhaps pernicious, influence on those around him. His apparently innocent involvement in such innocuous events as the throwing of a snowball or the teaching of card tricks to a small boy in the end prove neither innocent nor innocuous. Fifth Business stands alone as a remarkable story told by a rational man who discovers that the marvelous is only another aspect of the real. The Manticore Around a mysterious death is woven a glittering, fantastical, cunningly contrived trilogy of novels. Luring the reader down labyrinthine tunnels of myth, history and magic, THE DEPTFORD TRILOGY provides an exhilarating antidote to a world from where 'the fear and dread and splendour of wonder have been banished'. World of Wonders This is the third novel in Davies's major work, The Deptford Trilogy . This novel tells the life story of the unfortunate boy introduced in The Fifth Business , who was spirited away from his Canadian home by one of the members of a traveling side show, the Wanless World of Wonders.

Reviews
"If you are the kind of reader who looks for traces of the marvelous and the unexpected in narrative as well as daily life, then soon you will, like me, treasure these novels." --Kelly Link " The Deptford Trilogy boldly commingles the extraordinary and the everyday, at times attaining what Davies once called, in talking about melodrama, 'the compelling immediacy of a dream.'" --Michael Dirda

Item as described, good price, well packaged, arrived slightly later than hoped (not in time for Christmas ) but the order was placed in a very busy shipping period. No issue with the seller’s speed of response and sending the item. Great seller!

I was pleasantly surprised by how soon I received this textbook given that it shipped from outside the U.S. It was packaged well with no damage. The price was right. And I greatly appreciated the communication informing me where the book was shipping from and including a tracking number. Overall, a positive experience, - online shopping the way it should be. I've bought books from this seller several times now without any complaints and will surely buy from them again. Thanks a lot!

Quality and hard to find book that won't be released 'til January 2025 in the U.S.A. Fantastic price. Book was in a secure and protective package. Arrived a few days after I placed order and that was faster than I expected. Seller is a fantastic communicator and proactive in regards to tracking status. I'd definitely buy from them in the future.

I decided to buy this book because something about appealed to me. I was glad I bought it, because so far I am definately enjoying reading it....and to my surprise, although I had never heard of it before, I just read an article about in Oprah Magazine. It was a favorite read of a celebrity she had as a guest. I would recommend this book to someone that likes to read a book that's really going make you look forward to the next page. I will probably be selling this on eBay when I am finished reading it!

  • The Deptford Trilogy

I have been curious to read this novel as I have heard that Robertson Davies has a highly pleasing style. I was not in the least disappointed. Davies writes in a lucid style and weaves a tale both intricate in its plot and with wonderfully developed characters. The plot ( which I will give away nothing ) is never boring and quite thought provoking. I love the method in which the tale is brought to a conclusion which was extremely satisfying and left nothing out. BRAVO!! AN EXCELLENT NOVEL
