We are pleased to be able to offer our bulk, three pound lots of Foreign Coins again to our customers. These lots have proved very popular over the years and while we can't guarantee what will be in your assortment as we buy the coins in large, bulk bags and don't know what our dealers are shipping us, we do try to make sure that you receive good value for your money. We briefly observe the mixture to make sure that you are not getting a lot of duplication or coins from one specific country. We try to make sure that there are Bi-Metallic coins in the lot and a good solid mixture of variety. Keep in mind that we can not guarantee the coins that you will receive as we purchase the coins in large lots and that in larger lot purchases, it is impossible to not have duplication and multiple coins from the same country. We take this into consideration and as an incentive offer a lower price per pound. Based on the composition of the different metals that the coins are minted with, the lots often contain a scrap value close to your purchase price not factoring in the collectible nature of the coins you might find in the lot. Again, we do not guarantee what you will receive, although our goal is your satisfaction. So we do try to ensure that you get a good mix of coins and will add coins from the 1800s or Third Reich era to make sure that you are getting a good mix.
These lots often contain coins from the 1800's to present day. There will be demonetized coins and some that are still in use in their respective countries. There will be coins that are from countries that no longer exist or have moved on to the Euro. We guarantee that you will not get loaded up on Canadian or Mexican like many of the other offerings on the site. We will also state that you will not find Euros or Pounds in the lot or silver or gold coins. You might also find an occasional brass token used for video games, laundry, etc. or a cardboard tax token from a US state but not the large US casino tokens that are in many of these lots to make up weight. You might also find a corroded or bent coin. With the amount of bulk we buy, it is impossible to eliminate everything, so we generally compensate in advance by including extra weight with your purchase. You will find that a Three Pound Lot weighs closer to 3.2-3.4 pounds because we believe in giving our customers a little extra just in case. We also observe to make sure that you will not receive excessive duplication of a particular coin although you might end up with multiple denominations of coins from the same country.
These lots are great for collectors and you will find that the catalog value of these coins exceeds the price you are paying. We find they are great training tools and as a teacher, I have used them to teach World Geography to my students. I break them up into groups of four students and give them a World Coin book and a pound of coins. They then have to research the coins, identify the country that they came from, the monetary unit the country uses, whether the country is still using the coin or has experienced a change due to hyper-inflation or has moved on to the Euro or simply no longer exists. The students then get to divide up the coins and keep them as a remembrance to their lesson. I have found that this lesson helps the students retain more knowledge then simple rote memorization of countries. They actually learn about the countries, touch the money, learn that there are other currencies out there besides the US dollar, and they then pick a country that they would like to learn more about and present a report to the class.
I believe that this would be a great activity to do with your children, generally good for fifth graders and older. You will bond with your kids and learn a new hobby together.
