As you are most likely aware, the original paperback AUTHORIZED editions of The Lord of the Rings were released in the USA in 1965 featuring the now famous triptych by Barbara Remington entitled Wilderness on the covers of the books, as shown above. Offered here is a genuine set, meaning all three books were released at the same time in the same month and are in their original slipcase. These three are dated August 1966 and are the 7th, 5th, & 4th printings respectively. For the uninitiated, a triptych are three pictures when laid side by side form a singular larger picture.
This edition was the first Ballantine Books printing of the "Second and Fully Authorized Edition" and came in a slipcase with a matching cover. Over the ensuing 6 years, there were over 40 printings with this cover on it, and it was not changed until 1971 when the covers with Tolkien's own drawings were released.
- The Fellowship of the Ring
- The Two Towers
- The Return of the King
Early editions of this set are some of the rarest sets of The Lord of the Rings ever to appear in print and Tolkien's popularity had not yet flourished so there were just not that many printed, and is here offered for your consideration is an EXTREMELY early set. They are in exceptionally clean condition, but there is a detailed physical description below. In the meantime the actual books appear below.
Also in this set is an even rarer edition of Tolkien lore. In case you are unaware of the "lion" saga, here it is... When Tolkien released The Hobbit in the US, Ballantine commissioned the same artist who did the Tryptich covers for The Lord of the Rings to do a matching cover for The Hobbit to be released in September of that year. She was told it was more lighthearted, a sort of children's story, and having never actually READ it, she put a lion on the cover about to drink from the pond. Now we all know there is no lion in The Hobbit, and Tolkien was absolutely FURIOUS. But before Ballantine could pull the cover, 5 printings had already gone to press and been released! It was later airbrushed out, but First USA Editions of The Hobbit have the Lion on the cover! If you never thought you'd see a first edition of a Tolkien set, here is one. This is a Second Printing from September of 1965, and it is shown right. This is one of many unusual editions I have listed this week along with the other dozens of items including many early printings. Suffice to say that there are many, MANY copies of these sets floating around in one form or another, but seldom will you see genuine copies ACTUALLY FROM the 60's, matched set in anywhere near as clean of condition as those being offered here. I have been collecting Tolkien's works since I was teenager IN the 60's, and have literally hundreds of sets available, some quite rare, some as common as dirt. This happens to be one of my more rare offerings. Grab it before someone else does!
And if you have any requests, by all means, send me an email; if I have it, I'll list it right away for you (no off eBay sales...)
Regarding auctions, let me add that I've been collecting art, books, music and "stuff" for over 35 years and have amassed an enormous collection with many duplicates. I am very picky about what I buy (especially in records and books!) In like fashion, I don't like surprises when I buy things from auction so I promise everything I know about this item is in this description.
*This is a gorgeous set in EXCELLENT condition. While it appears that the set has been read, it is almost impossible to tell that as the books are so clean. There is only a hint of a crease to the spines and the covers look brand new as you can see in the pictures. The only real flaw is that there is a number 10 on The Fellowship and Return of the King in ink on the top right corner. Why? Beats me... Other than that, this is about a pristine a set from this time period as you will ever see... LOTR ALL DATE MATCHED, Auguse 1966, Hobbit September 1965, First US Edition, Second Printing. Enjoy!

Why Are My Shipping & Handling Costs a Bit Higher than Other Sellers? Please Read on...
GUARANTEED DELIVERY OR YOUR MONEY BACK!I really DO CARE about when and how your product gets to you. Because the post office is so incredibly inept, I ONLY SHIP domestic packages INSURED, which is AUTOMATICALLY INCLUDED in the shipping cost, and that is not free as the post office charges for it. If your parcel gets lost OR damaged in freight, your item will be replaced if one is available OR you will be completely refunded!
IMPORTANT MONEY SAVING TIP! If you are bidding on more than one of my items and would like to SAVE MONEY by COMBINING SHIPPING costs, I will be happy to do so, BUT, YOU MUST WAIT until everything you are bidding on finishes and I send you a combined invoice BEFORE you complete checkout. Once you complete checkout on an item, I cannot go back and combine it with anything else as eBay considers it a closed deal. TRUST ME, I will send you a combined invoice at the end of each item with updated and combined shipping costs and any deal discounts that may apply.
WHEN YOU ARE DONE BIDDING, winners agree to pay promptly once they receive a final invoice.
All of the payment info you need will follow. California deliveries will require sales tax.

SHIPPING INFO: IMPORTANT!! I can ONLY SHIP to the address as noted in PAYPAL'S "TRANSACTION DETAILS". If you want it shipped to an alternate location, you will need to register that address BEFORE paying or it will be shipped to the registered address.
Shipping costs will be determined by weight & destination, but media mail postage is FREE within the USA! You may click on the SHIPPING & PAYMENT tab found at the top of the page, just under the item's picture for all shipping options to all destinations both domestic and international. There you will find drop down boxes for your location and you can then use the shipping calculator to determine the correct cost for where you live.
Media Mail (once known as 4th class mail) is a special class of postage for books, music, videos and other printed media available within the US and territories. It is far less expensive than Priority Mail, but - it ..... is ........... slooowwwww!!!! Despite USPS claims of 3-9 day delivery times, MEDIA MAIL CAN actually TAKE UP TO 3 WEEKS to arrive, and their tracking info is frequently not updated until it actually arrives, making that feature pretty useless! PLEASE remember this when you leave feedback scores as the choice is yours and not my fault if it takes a long time to get there! If you want it in a week or less, you are going to have to bite the bullet and pay for Priority Mail which will get it there in 2-3 working days, 99% of the time, but it is more expensive. Basically, the choice is yours, but if you choose media mail, please don't write to me in 5 days asking where your package is, because the post office will have it and most of the time, they don't have a clue!
All International deliveries go by Priority Mail and usually arrive within about 2 weeks. Faster shipping is available on request, but expensive.Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. You can check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying. Finally, we do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts"; it is illegal and immoral.
