1963 Volkswagen Samba Bus 23 Window Custom

Featured on Chrome Underground

1600 cc flat 4-cylinder engine, 4-speed manual transmission, torsion bar front suspension, swing axle rear suspension with shock absorbers. Wheelbase: 94.0"

When Ben Pon drew his original concept for the Volkswagen Type 2 transporter, he probably had no idea of the hundreds of uses this little box-on-wheels would be called on to perform. Yes, there were the utilitarian tasks of hauling parcels and people, as well as working in emergency and service areas. No one could have predicted the love-affair groups of hippies and rock-fans would have for these little party wagons, or how a group known as "surfers" would practically live out of these micro-buses.

In basic form the Transporter passenger van was equipped with what collectors today call the 11-window configuration, which for those who count included the split windshield as two panes, windows in the two front doors, three down each side and the back glass. The ultimate glass house on wheels was the 23-window version that included oval windows along the top and two more in the extreme rear corners. This custom version was recently found in Sao Paulo, Brazil and based on its incredible craftsmanship and fantastic appeal the trip was made to offer it here in the USA.

Starting with a solid body, it was taken down to bare metal, completely rebuilt and transformed. Then, it was carefully given several primer and color coats with a clear finish. In stock form this microbus came equipped with a 1.6 liter flat-four cylinder engine, backed by a four-speed manual transmission. However, the engine is this example is a completely rebuilt Volkswagen 1600 cc flat four engine, fitted with a fully synchronized four-speed manual transmission.

Volkswagen microbuses are undergoing a renaissance of interest, exacerbated by the announcement that the last microbuses still being built in Brazil will halt production on December 31, 2013. A new generation has also embraced them and made them into blank canvases upon which they create their vision of what a microbus should be – or should’ve been. This custom 23-window microbus is an example of what imagination can produce, when money is no object.

Notice to Bidders:

The following sections outlines important information about our cars and working with our company. Please read our complete terms and conditions.

As a bidder, if you do not intend to purchase the car, do not have financing in place, or you are simply playing around, DO NOT BID. Non-paying bidders greatly affect our profit margin, making it harder to effectively run our business and provide quality service. Please avoid bidding as a courtesy to others who intend to purchase the vehicle

If you are a meticulous buyer or inexperienced with classic automobiles, we recommend not buying a classic sight unseen. Spend the extra money to travel and see the vehicle, or invest $100 to have a 3rd party inspection done on the vehicle BEFORE you bid on the car. Call us ahead of time we will honestly tell you what we estimate the car will sell for on the auction and answer any questions you may have. With all do respect to all bidders, if you consider yourself a difficult buyer refrain from bidding on our vehicles and as we much rather sell a vehicle for less and have an enjoyable mutual transaction.

Car quality

It is one of the hardest jobs to convey the subjective condition of a classic vehicle through a computer. We see and inspect hundreds of potential collector cars each week and we try to convey our professional experience through our descriptions. We sell quality classics in different stages and conditions.  We post numerous pictures and give a brief description of the vehicle. Please examine those closely before deciding to bid.

We do our absolute best to describe our cars and to convey its condition to you our potential customers, but please understand classic vehicles are OLD vehicles and that they are SOLD AS-IS, WHERE-IS. It is true that our vehicles do sell for a good bargain and fantastic prices, but you are almost always going to pay for what you get. If a car sells for $5,000, you are buying a car within that range of price; in respect to value, collectability, and condition.

In the unforeseen situation that there is a major description discrepancy (this is where the 3rd party inspection or a personal inspection is an essential tool), as a last resort a full refund, minus the cost of shipping, can be used to mutually resolve an honest possible misunderstanding. These situations are extremely rare, they are most certainly not intended and can easily be avoided.

We require a $500 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit within 24 hours of winning the auction. Deposit payment forms are only wire transfer, certified funds, cash, paypal, or credit card over the phone. Winning bidders agree that this credit card deposit may not be disputed.
