"With the Japanese invasion of Indonesia imminent, Nell Van De Graaff fled her home on a Dutch military base, pregnant and sought safety in the mountains of West Java. Pregnant and accompanied by her three small children, the eldest of whom was only four years old, she had no idea where she would end up or if she would see her husband again.

This is the moving story of a mother who, against terrible odds, willed herself to survive for those she loved. After six months in a remote hillside area, where she was befriended and protected by Indonesian villagers, she and her children were rounded up and herded into a civilian women’s prison camp. Three years of appalling hardship, misery, sickness and degradation followed, her only support being the desperate hope that freedom must come eventually. This story of courage is told simply, humbly and gently. It contains no trace of bitterness, only the calm wisdom of a survivor."
