A PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERED TO BE MADE IN ANY LENGTH

THE GREENHOUSE shown in the photo above is 9 x 12 feet and was built at a cost of $172 (in 1950 dollars.)

The most important parts to be noted are the front and first six-foot section of the roof. These are standard. After that, the sections are repeated, and this beautifully designed structure can be lengthened indefinitely.

There are four hinged ventilators (see top of photo) made of double-strength glass panes. Alternately, these can be made of Lexan plastic in areas where falling tree limbs, errant golf balls, snow buildup etc., pose a hazard. If snow buildup is a serious problem, increase the slope of the roof. When painting the overhead panels with thinned white paint to reduce direct sunlight, first-time greenhouse builders should be aware that it is a lot easier to paint the glass before you install it, rather than have paint drip down from overhead. Also, having owned several small greenhouses, there are some precautions I take before I bring in the first plant. 1. Secure fine mosquito netting over the vents to keep out egg-laying beetles, and moths. If you put netting under the vents they become catchalls for leaves. 2. I take extra time ensuring a good fit around vents and doors, so that when I'm away for a few days the humidity stays at the intended levels. 3. I install plastic drains in the floor covered with fine-mesh plastic screen, and periodically sprinkle the area around the drains with salt. Snails and slugs can smell huckleberries, strawberries, and ornamental coleus a mile away. If there's a way to get in, they'll find it (voice of experience.) With diligence, insecticides are unneeded, and Organic produce always sells at a premium.

Briefly, while on the topic of Organic,  many folks are surprised (sometimes insulted) when I say that the produce they've grown without insecticides and sold for years at a local farmer's market isn't actually organic. When you begin marketing to a major distributor they'll do a lab analysis, and you'll find that fertilizers such as Miracle-Gro, growth stimulants containing gibberelin, even a fertilizer made from your own household food scraps that were non-organic, can get your inventory rejected. Miracle-Gro fans don't send me angry email. It took me years of eliminating fertilizers one by one to learn this lesson. Seriously consider using a compost of fallen leaves and your own (non-fertilized) grass clippings to save yourself a lot of headaches. Then, before you approach Kroger's or Wal-Mart get your produce tested.

4. Maximize every single inch of the space. Consider hydroponics. Grow tomatoes and berries from hanging baskets, see topsyturvey.com

5. Make sure that the entire area around the greenhouse is accessible so that you can check the foundation for level. Jacking up the floor a half inch or adding a cinder block once a year is a lot easier than repairing glass roof panes. (Voice of experience.)

6. Finally, an electronic thermometer will let you monitor the temperature in your greenhouse from your kitchen, or by computer from anywhere in the world. Please see Electronic Thermometer plans in my ebay store.
