Very nice Souvenir Abstract Log issued by United States Lines for their
turbine steamer Washington (1933//1951)

Original, Log is for post war voyage # 18, the Eastbound leg of May 4, 1949 from New York

Measures 3 1/4" x 5" (closed) and gives a detailed account of the 6 day passage.

  Very Good to Excellent condition.

FYI: The 24,289 grt ss Washington was built by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, New Jersey.
She made her maiden voyage from New York to Hamburg on May 10, 1933.
She was taken over by the U.S. Government in 1941and was converted to the US troopship Mount Vernon.

Purchased by the US government in 1942, she was renamed Washington in 1945
and operated by the U.S. Maritime Commission.
She returned to commercial service on April 2, 1946, with a New York-Southampton sailing.

In 1948, Washington was chartered by United State Lines, for her original New York-Hamburg service.
She made her last commercial voyage from Southampton to New York on October 12, 1951.
She was then turned back to the Maritime Commission,
which placed her on Military Sea Transportation Service duty through 1953.
In February 1954, Washington was mothballed as part of the Hudson River reserve fleet,
becoming the largest ship ever to travel up that river north of New York City.
She remained there until she was sold for scrap in 1965.
