Still very much in their infancy, extreme sports are now in the process of evolving from an underground attraction to a globally recognized group of sports. Since the late 60s and early 70s, skateboarding, snowboarding, in-line skating, rock climbing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, and other extreme sports were beginning to gain momentum and avid followers. Up until that time, marathon running and rock climbing were considered the most “extreme” sporting events of the day. As each extreme sport, a phrase that denotes an activity involving a high level of risk combined with athletic ability and focus, gained more and more fans and participants, several developments were set in motion. These were brand names and product lines, famous extreme sports athletes, and of course, extreme sports tournaments.

The largest and most prestigious extreme sports tournament is known as the X Games. The X Games are held annually in the summertime; the first tournament was held in 1995. Faintly resembling the structure of Olympic competition, the X Games features rally car racing, skateboarding, inline skating, BMX, motorcycle events, and more. The top three winners of each event receive gold, silver, and bronze medals and bragging rights in the extreme sports community. The Winter X Games, also held annually, features events in skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobile. Covered every year by ABC and multiple ESPN channels, the X Games are adding more and more legitimacy to the world of extreme sports with every thrilling event. Aside from the X Games, local competitions abound in the states as well as overseas, such as the Singapore Xtreme competition of 2009. Some argue the best moment of extreme sports to date was Taig Khris’ double backflip, others say it was Tony Hawk’s 900. Either way, there are plenty more stellar moments to come for the world of extreme sports.
