There’s only one Super Bowl. Actually, there have been many Super Bowls, but there’s only one Super Bowl per year. It’s held by the National Football League after the playoffs at the conclusion of the regular season. It pits the National Football Conference champions against the American Football Conference winners. Although Super Sunday has never been declared an official holiday, most football fans would say it deserves to be one. The Super Bowl is, however, a spectacle that somehow manages to be bigger each year than the last.

The first Super Bowl was held in 1967 as the championship game between the NFL and the upstart American Football League. The two leagues merged in 1966 after six years of competition for players and viewers. This was during the bowl era of college football, when the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl reigned. The NFL’s championship game had to be the biggest of them all--a Super Bowl. The two conferences gained parity in 1969 when the New York Jets of the old AFL defeated the Baltimore Colts of the NFL. Until then, the NFL was considered to be the superior league with better players and a longer tradition.

The modern Super Bowl features a giant pre-game party and an over-the-top halftime show with top musical acts and state-of-the-art pyrotechnics and multimedia. Celebrities of all sorts go to the Super Bowl to see and be seen. For sports fans, it is the party of the year every year. A trip to the Super Bowl is a once-in-a-lifetime event for most people.
