Widely recognized as one of the most popular equestrian sports, horse racing is founded upon centuries of history and competition. The earliest records of horse racing indicate that this sport was observed and enjoyed by the ancient Greeks during some of the earliest Olympics Games. Ancient Syrians and Egyptians held competitions consisting of both mounted riders and chariots drawn by the best horses of the time. Today, horse racing can be easily separated into three main types of sport: steeple chasing (which involves jumping the horse over a number of obstacles during the race), flat racing (the most well-known form of racing in the US) and harness racing. Harness racing actually does not require the horses to run at all, but rather pace or trot while drawing a rider in a specially designed carriage. The most popular and prestigious modern horse racing competition is the Triple Crown, which combines three races into one incredibly challenging feat. In order to claim this title as his own, a horse must win The Kentucky Derby, The Preakness Stakes and The Belmont Stakes. The allure of this coveted crown draws horses, riders and spectators of the sport from all over the world.

Though horse racing is seen to have found its start on the field of battle in ancient times, the sport has grown immensely over the course of thousands of years. From the primitive era of Byzantine war horses and the chariot races of ancient Greece to the more refined Thoroughbred races of today, horse racing has indeed become one of the most exciting and appealing equestrian sporting events in the world.
