Indiana-born John Mellencamp has been entertaining crowds since forming his first band at age 14. He married his high school sweetheart at age 18 in 1970. As a young father, he pursued a degree locally while making frequent visits to New York’s music scene. After 18 months, the trips paid off and he signed with Tony DeFries. His first release, “Chestnut Street Incident,” was released under the stage name Johnny Cougar; management insisted that Mellencamp’s true surname was too lengthy to market. In any case, the first album sold poorly. Mellencamp continued recording and had minor commercial success in the UK and Australia by the late 1970s. He became a US music icon in 1982 with hits including “Jack and Diane,” “Hurts so Good,” and “Hand to Hold On To.” These were followed up in ’83 with “Pink Houses” and other hits on the Billboard Top 20. Today he's reached international superstar status, continues recording new tunes, and regularly performs to sold-out stadium crowds.
