When Santana burst from the San Francisco music scene, nobody had heard anything like it. The band was based on American-style blues-rock, but it showed Latin and African influences. Instrumentally, they were loaded with Latin percussion players like Michael Carabello, Jose Chepita Areas and master percussionist Coke Escoveda, the father of Sheila E. They used timbales and congas--instruments rarely heard in rock music. Their drummer Michael Shrieve was a perfect fit with David Brown on bass. Gregg Rolie, who later formed Journey, played the Hammond B-3 organ. Their first album featured some terrific tunes like."Jingo."."Evil Way." and their epic jam number."Soul Sacrifice."

Santana's appearance at Woodstock was exhilarating.."Soul Sacrific." brought down the house and cemented Santana's name into the mind of young music fans. Their subsequent albums produced hits like."Black Magic Woman." and."Everybody's Everything." The band dissolved a few years later, leaving Carlos Santana to his destiny. He released the album."Love, Devotion and Surrende." with master fusion guitarist John McLaughlin and jazz singer Leon Thomas. The album showed what a forward thinker Santana was because jazz-fusion soon became a popular form with artists like Jan Hammer, Herbie Hancock and Billy Cobham.
