Possibly the most global sport in the world, soccer or “football” has been played for over 2500 years. While it is still up for debate, the early derivations of the sport have been most commonly traced back to ancient China and Japan, in which competitors kicked a leather ball around on a field. The sport has since seen several major changes as it matured across cultures, from the stories of “head-kicking” to the violence of the Roman version of the game. Eventually, with the skyrocketing popularity of the sport, all of the different approaches to the game converged into the sport as it is known today: elegant, powerful, and world-renowned.

Almost every country in the world has a national soccer team as well as several leagues and divisions that operate year round in regular season, tournament, or even exhibition play. Among the best leagues in the world are the Spanish Primera Division, the Italian Serie A, the English Premier League, and the German Bundesliga. These European teams have been forging football empires since their debuts in the sport as early as the 1930s and 40s. Today’s most popular teams number in the dozens, with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Brazil, Spain, and hundreds of other teams drawing huge global constituencies. As it concerns the major tournaments, the two most prestigious soccer titles are the World Cup and the UEFA Cup tournaments. The former takes place every 4 years, always 2 years away from the Olympics, and the latter is an annual tournament.

Ironically, soccer was seen as a heretical act in Elizabethan England. In fact, under King Edward and Queen Elizabeth, anyone caught playing soccer would be chastised and jailed. If they were only alive today, they would see that it has blossomed into a worldwide obsession.
