A fun explanation for kids of the special effects in the movie Ghostbusters
The book itself is pristine, especially considering its three-decade age. Even the stickers were unused (how 80's is that? It has stickers!) It was nostalgic fun to read the text and see how they explained all of the special effects in Ghostbusters so a kid could understand it. And these were hand-made effects, things like puppets, optical animation, stop-motion, and men in suits on miniature sets. Sadly, nowadays the book would be a one-page pamphlet saying, "It was all done digitally. The end." It was very cool to discover this book. I had never heard of it, and to find one in positively pristine condition was like time travel. The seller that I purchased this from also offers a companion piece, the Ghostbusters Training Manual. I did not buy one from the seller, as I've owned that one since the 80's, but I highly recommend it, it's also a very fun item.

Peter Jackson's first big budget film, definitely enjoyable!
Really well made movie. It had some plot twists that I wasn't expecting, and whenever a film explores its own universe so intelligently and still keeps one step ahead of the audience, that's always refreshing. Peter Jackson was just getting into his in-depth documentary/bonus feature mode here, and the extras are fantastic. Originally done for laser-disc, they translate well to DVD. Solid performances, fledgling effects that still hold up fairly well, great writing and directing. I got it for just a few bucks and got several nights' escapism from it. Money well spent!

The Producers (1968) DVD
I recently purchased from eBay a copy of the original 1968 movie 'The Producers' starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. I bought this movie as a companion piece for its musical remake starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. It was fascinating to study just how many of the song lyrics had their basis in what was simply screenplay dialogue in the original. I also found it very interesting to see what director Mel Brooks had decided didn't work in the original (such as the hippie Hitler) and how things were revised when he rewrote his own material as a Broadway musical (e.g., the gay director has to play Hitler at the last second). The DVD bought in the auction arrived in perfect condition, and played flawlessly... including its additional features. I loved finally seeing this first film of Mel Brooks, which is referenced in small ways throughout the rest of his career (including 'To Be Or Not To Be'). I didn't enjoy the dated late 1960's writing, especially the drug references, but I found it very telling that even Brooks himself realized they were unnecessary to the overall story and omitted them for the far more timeless musical version.
