Fantastic old-school racing game that is too good to miss! Own it!
Ever since playing this title back in 1997-98 I have always had a soft spot for it. Sure its Mario Kart at its core but its so much more than that when you get down to it. Having three equally unique types of vehicles really separates it from the standard Mario Kart formula. The karts are as you would expect them to be, the planes and hovercraft not so much as they all handle quite different and each have a bit of a learning curve to master. With such varied terrain to race on, giving the player the opportunity to take to the skies or hop and skip over water, creates so many fun possibilities, especially when you mix and match for your own races with friends. Another notable difference that makes this game great is the weapon system and how it upgrades as you remain patient and try to collect the same color balloon. Your patience will reward you with upgrades such as taking a standard missile attack and making it a homing missile, and then even further if you collect a third balloon of the same color, an entire arsenal of 10 rockets to rain terror on the competition! The game world is also a pleasant surprise in comparison to Mario Kart. In Diddy Kong Racing you are able to travel between areas of an island that serves as a hub from one tier of racing to another. You'll start off in a specific area, win some races in which you are rewarded golden balloons, and then use them to unlock new areas of the island that build up in difficulty. Within each tier there are specific challenges as well that keep the game fresh such as facing a boss when all races are completed,going back through the tracks and collecting coins while trying to win the race, and finally a trophy tournament to finish up the area. I would highly recommend this title for anyone who want to play an extremely fun and challenging game that offers a lot of variety and replayability. Whether your zooming around on a kart, blasting your competitors out of the skies in planes or skimming the waves in your hovercraft, one things for sure you're going to be having a blast!
