Great way to max out my old desktop
3 of 4 found this helpful I stumbled upon this processor while investigating an upgrade to my desktop. I run a few games but I'm not competitive in a way that demands the latest technology. I had an i7-920 and decided it was time for a change. I first looked at the current generation of tech but soon found myself with a $700 shopping cart after adding a motherboard, CPU, ram, PSU & case.
The w3690 is a Westemere-EP generation xeon. It drops right into the LGA 1366 socket on my X58 board. Its stock clock was already much higher than my i7-920, plus I was able to overclock it quite a bit to 4.4Ghz with water cooling. It idles at 28-35C and at load touches the 60's-70's.
Adding 2 cores obviously makes a huge difference, especially at 4.4Ghz. Multithreaded apps such as After Effects are much quicker and rendering is sped up immensely. Overall the system is snappier with the 4 extra threads helping.
