A carburetor is a piece of equipment that mixes and regulates the flow of air and fuel into the engine cylinders to cause combustion in a controlled exhaust system. It is a drivers direct link to the internal combustion engine of their Chevrolet Chevette. Carburetors arent just automotive accessories; theyre integral to the automotive, aviation, and small engines industries as well.

The major parts of a Chevette carburetor include:

• Float chamber: The float chamber is used to maintain the gasoline at the necessary atmospheric pressure. The gasoline supply is refilled by a float-driven controller. As the bowl fills up, the needle is pushed by the float into its seat, cutting off the fuel to control and maintain the full amount.
• Venturi pipe: The Venturi pipe works by creating a vacuum inside the pipe that causes the main nozzle to move the fuel inside the pipe. The pressure causes the fuel spray to be forced toward the throttle valve. This process is called the Venturi effect.
• Throttle valve: The throttle is located between the inlet pipe and the spray that leads to the engine. The accelerator controls the throttle via cables that are connected to the throttle by a lever. Variations can be made to the throttle faucet to improve a cars performance.
• Fuel jet: This is referred to as the main nozzle, the metering fuel jet controls the amount of fuel that moves into the engine.
• Diaphragm chamber: As the fuel is drawn out from the chamber, the diaphragm is forced inward due to ambient force. The diaphragm is attached to the needle faucet, which opens and closes to allow fuel to flow in and out of the chamber.

The carburetor is an essential part of gas-powered vehicles because:

The carburetor on a Chevrolet Chevette works the same as on any other vehicle:

1. Air moves into the top of the carburetor from the Chevette’s air intake, passing via a filter that cleans it of debris. On ignition of the engine, the choke is set so that it nearly blocks the top of the pipe to reduce the amount of incoming air.
2. The air is then forced via a Venturi in the center of the tube, which causes it to speed up and creates a pressure drop. The drop in air pressure causes suction on the pipe, which draws in fuel.
3. Opening the throttle causes increased air and fuel flow to the cylinder, which increases the engine’s power and the Chevette’s speed.
4. A miniature fuel tank, known as the float feed chamber, supplies the motor of the Chevrolet with gasoline. As the gasoline level falls, the spigot at the top opens due to the float in the chamber falling. This allows increased fuel flow to refill the chamber from the main gas tank, causing the float to rise and closing the spigot again.
