Fiat 500 Control Arms Parts

Fiat produced its first generation of Fiat 500s, referred to as the Classic Fiat, from 1957 to 1975 for city driving. In 2007, Fiat began producing and marketing its second 500 generation. With these two generations of the same vehicle, you can see the development of unique parts, including Fiat 500 control arms parts.

What purpose do control arm parts serve?

Control arms connect wheel hubs to the car frame. Control arms in Fiats are also the principal connection that distributes the weight of the vehicle’s body. This connection allows the wheel hubs to move up and down while holding the tires in position to keep them from moving forward or back. The bushing and ball-joint connections minimize road vibrations, effectively isolating the road from the frame.

Are there different types of control arms for the 500?

In the Classic 500, Fiat used a stamped-iron arm for each wheel and a lateral design. Within a year, Fiat Classic 500 engineers realized that their Classic Fiat car needed more flex in the collar-arm connection to compensate for roll effects. They settled on an “L” shape with the top of the “L” connecting to the wheel hub through an improved ball joint. The bottom of the “L” connects to the Fiat 500 frame through two bushings.

This design works well in the Classic Fiat 500. In the 2007 Fiat 500 version and going forward, Fiat began using poured steel collar arms of the same design to reduce wear and add strength.

Are the Fiat 500 control arms interchangeable?

Control arms are designed to fit each wheel in the Classic Fiat 500 and present models. Unlike four-wheel drives or other off-road vehicles, the Fiat 500 uses one collar arm per wheel. A left arm cannot substitute for a right. The parts will not fit. The same is true of the lower control arms for the rear. Also, the rear lower control arms cannot transfer to the front. As a result, each control arm is produced to work on a specific wheel.

What symptoms indicate a bad collar arm?

Indicators of control-arm failure or wear are the same in the Fiat 500 as in any other type of car.

  • The first symptom of part-wear is the sudden presence of a small vibration in the steering column.
  • If you do not pay attention to the vibration, the vehicle will gradually start to wander.
  • Violent clunking noises from a wheel is also a sign of worn arm parts.
When should these parts be replaced?

Whether you drive a Classic Fiat or a more contemporary Fiat 500, faulty control-arm parts should be replaced at the first sign of wear. The Classic Fiats stamped-iron arms are generally more subject to wear and failure than the poured-steel designs. Upgrading the iron arm to a steel model is always a good idea. If the vehicle has been in an accident, then it’s likely that a twisting pressure was applied to all of the control arms and parts. Make sure to check those parts before getting back on the road.
