ERTL Super Mario Bros. Action Figures

The vintage Super Mario Bros. toy line by ERTL was sold in the U.S. and abroad in the 1990s. The toys include such characters as Mario and Luigi. These action figures were released in conjunction with a movie about Mario and Luigi, which hit theaters in 1993, and the world of Super Mario Bros.

The Super Mario Brothers are a pair of video game characters named Mario and Luigi. They were originally introduced in a series of games for the Nintendo Entertainment System. They are a pair of Italian plumbers who spend their time trying to save Princess Peach from the dragon King Koopa.

The figures that ERTL produced from the spin-off movie are quite different in appearance from the characters in the original Nintendo game. They are all portrayed by human actors in the movie. The action figures are all standard size and are created to realistically recreate the faces of the actors who played the characters.

Along with action figures, ERTL also released two 12-inch figures, one of Mario and one of Luigi, that talk, using phrases from the film. The figures have movable heads, and Mario is wearing a red shirt and pants with blue accents, while Luigi sports a green shirt and pants with blue accents.

• Mario: This Super Mario figure has a red and blue jumpsuit with an attached hat. Mario comes with a plunger-lunger and a tool belt.
• Luigi: Marios brother, Luigi, has a green and blue jumpsuit with an attached hat. Luigi comes with a wrench-whipper and a tool belt.
• Koopa: The Koopa has a military-style uniform with an accessory gun.
• Goomba: A constant annoyance to Mario and Luigi, the Goomba has a green reptile head with a flame thrower and a removable red fabric coat. There are two versions of Goomba, one with a dinosaur-like head that was only available with a play set.
• Spike: Spike has a gangster-style red and blue suit, with an accessory devo gun.
• Iggy: Iggy has a gangster-style gray suit, with an accessory flame thrower.

The line has two play sets:

• Super Mario Bros. Movie Crash Action Police Car: This toy car has breakaway panels and doors so that you can reenact crash scenes from the Super Mario movie. It also has a car-flipping front loader and a suction cup attachment.
• Devo Chamber with Special Edition Goomba: This toy “de-evolves” action figures into Goombas. This set comes with a special edition figure with a dinosaur-like head, slightly different from the toy contained in the individual packages.
