What About Ferrari Names? The Ferrari experience starts with the prancing horse emblem and continues through the company's unique approach to naming. Most models don't actually have a name as such, but rather a numeric or even alphanumeric designation instead. That would be simple enough if only the it had been consistent. Some of the different methods the company have used include:
- Cylinder Size: The first system, primarily applied to V-12 cars, referred to the capacity of each individual cylinder in cubic centimeters. It was most recently applied to the Ferrari 488 GTB and Ferrari 488 Spider models.
- Capacity and Configuration: With the introduction of the Ferrari Dino 246, the system changed again. This time the number referred to the displacement in liters followed by the cylinder count. A 245 was 2.4 liters and 6 cylinders, while the 308 was 3.0 liters and 8 cylinders. This system was followed by the 328, 348, 430, 458, and 512.
- Capacity: Meanwhile the 360 and 450 relied on the capacity alone, referring to 3.6 and 4.5-liter engines. Variants on this include the 6.0 liter 599 and the 3.5-liter Ferrari 355 which used the last digit to refer to its use of 5 valves per cylinder.
- Names: Ferrari has also used names for its cars such as Testa Rossa, which means "red head," and refers to red head covers on the engine. Monza and Mondial were popular names for the company's smaller four-cylinder cars.
With over seven decades of history there are plenty of vehicles for you to choose from, and they all show the company's F1 heritage from the moment you get behind the wheel.
- For sheer power it's hard to get past the F12berlinetta, with its 12-cylinder power.
- Other popular models include the Ferrari Portofino and GTC4Lusso.
- Looking further back there is the 308 made popular by Magnum PI and the very similar 348.
