A white Jumpman logo on a black outsole, a "Motorboat Jones" tag on the tongue, and a black "23" at the base of the ankle define the Jordan 9 Challenge Red's design. Six perforated pockets, which increase in size from front to back, hug the black lacing section as they arch across the synthetic upper. For protection on each side of the forefoot, the mudguard on the red midsole sports four raised teeth. The outsole, which has another giant white Jumpman logo covering the heel and the rear of the arch, contains two separate traction zones under the balls of the feet and three protective pads under the toes. In contrast to other Air Jordans, the Jordan 9 Challenge Red has a tieless lacing section with a one-piece mesh tongue.
