Gas Tanks for Honda Nighthawk 250

The Honda Nighthawk 250 is a standard motorcycle with a low seat that is designed to be light and easily maneuverable. It has an air-cooled parallel twin engine and is known for its economic fuel efficiency and ease of maintenance. Its gas tank holds 4 gallons with a 0.8 reserve to give you ample warning and an extra mile or so to find a fuel source before reaching empty.

What is a petcock?

The Nighthawk 250 Honda motorcycle gas tank features a "reserve." The reserve isnt a separate storage area for fuel; it is a designation given to the last portion of fuel in the gas tank. The petcock is a main and reserve fuel valve that changes which fuel tube feeds the engine. One tube is located toward the bottom of the tank, and the other is about an inch higher. In the usual "on" position, the fuel is fed through the top tube. In the "reserve" position, fuel is fed through the bottom tube. The petcock facilitates this system.

What is the purpose of a tank pad?

A tank pad for a Nighthawk 250 usually consists of a sticker with an adhesive backing on one side and a gripping surface on the other side. The gripping surface may feel rubbery and can be any color or even transparent. A tank pad is applied on top of the tank where the rider may come into contact with it. The tank pad serves two major purposes:

  • The first purpose is to protect the Honda tank from metal objects on riding apparel. Continuous bumping or minor friction from zippers, buttons, and belt buckles can wear down the paint on the tank over time and may also cause small dents or other superficial imperfections. The tank pad helps to keep the Honda tank in good shape.
  • The second purpose is to prevent the rider from slipping when pressed against the tank. The model style of the Nighthawk doesnt usually call for a position that has the entire abdomen pressed against the tank, but these situations may occur if there are modifications made to the motorcycle for racing or if there is a passenger. In these circumstances, the tank pad keeps the rider centered over the gas tank and prevents side slipping.
Is a locking gas cap necessary on a Honda Nighthawk?

This is a personal decision that depends on how securely the individual can store the Nighthawk at home and elsewhere. The ultimate purpose of the locking gas cap is to prevent tampering with the contents of the CB250 fuel tank. It is possible, though unusual, for someone to siphon fuel out through an unlocked gas cap, leaving the individual with an unexpectedly empty tank. The other type of fuel tank tampering involves putting a foreign substance into the tank. This is a potentially costly offense for the Honda. A locking gas cap keeps the motorcycle safe from both.
