Rifle scope specifications, like those found on the Vortex Viper, are the numbers engraved on the outside of the tube. They include magnification and brightness.

• The magnification is the power of the rifle scope to enlarge the image of a distant object as seen through the reticle. A rifle scope marked 4x makes distant images look four times bigger. If you view a target 100 yards away with a 4-power scope, it will appear to be 25 yards away.
• A rifle scope marked 4-10x makes distant images look four times bigger and closer through the reticle, and the image can be increased to 10 times larger.
• The second number is the size of the front or objective lens in millimeters. This relates directly to the rifle scope's ability to use the available light.
• A 50mm lens will show clearer, brighter images, than a 30mm lens.

Over time, dust and dirt accumulate on the lenses which causes deflection of sunlight and affecting the sights, especially in the low light hours of dusk and dawn. To remove them, perform the following steps:

• Dust and dirt should be removed with a dry, soft bristle brush that is completely free of oil.
• Stubborn smudges, such as dried raindrops, may be removed in a circular pattern with cotton swabs and lens cleaning solution.
• Use a soft dry cotton cleaning cloth to dry the lens thoroughly.
• The last step should involve a final polishing, using a circular motion with a soft, oil-free, chemical-free microfiber cloth. Unlike a cotton cloth, a microfiber cloth will leave no microscopic particles behind.
