Nicaragua has a long history of poverty, political instability and poor treatment at the hand of outsiders . . . which might make it seem like a bad place to establish a resort community or an upscale retirement village. But there are always folks who won't pass up the opportunity to make money, and since the American dollar goes a lot farther in Nicaragua than in most countries, a handful of bold entrepreneurs have come to the country in hopes of turning the Southern coastline into "the next Florida," even going so far as to open a school for folks interested in becoming domestics. Not all of the locals are happy about this, and as Yankee businessmen and their local allies try to build their dream resorts, angry Nicaraguans on the right and the left, as well as a cranky would-be cowboy and a radical-turned-poet, lead the charge against the interlopers. Filmmaker Julian Pinder casts a witty eye on these curious happenings in Latin America in his documentary LAND, which was an official selection at the 2010 Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival.
