1997 Demi Moore & Anne Bancroft Give Bold Performances
Years ago, when "G.I. Jane" first came out, the US military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," gender & sexual supremacist policy had such a profound political effect upon those of us seeking an egalitarian 'United' States that my own dislike of that policy skewed how I reviewed this film. 10 years after first viewing the film on VHS in the privacy of my home, I've come back to watch "G.I. Jane" numerous times by now. My political biases finally dissipated enough for me to see this film with new eyes. Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil (Demi Moore) is a shinning example of a very bright promising young woman who's persuing a military career. In order to do so, O'Neil's got to overcome the US military's gender biases against women holding high ranking & battle ground positions. O'Neil's husband's a career ... Years ago, when "G.I. Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil (Demi Moore) is a shinning example of a very bright promising young woman who's persuing a military career. In order to do so, O'Neil's got to overcome the US military's gender biases against women holding high ranking & battle ground positions. O'Neil's husband's a career military officer as well. So, when his wife's offered the opportunity, by a prominent, powerful & politically manipulative US Senator, Lillian de Haven (Anne Bancroft), to become the 1st woman candidate who makes it through boot camp in a U.S. Navy Seal unit, he's none too happy about it & she's got mixed feelings. The temptation to prove herself (& potentionally, other women) equal to any of her man military peers is simply too great for Lt. O'Neil to ignore. O'Neil enters into a boot camp unit for potential Navy Seals, a covert force compromised of the cream-of-the-crop of the combined armed services. In order to make it past boot camp into the unit, Lt. O'Neil undergoes extreme & predictable brute, machismo sexism. The guys do not want a woman bunking with them or having any part in their unit. In order to become a Navy Seal, boot camp is necessarily a grueling process of preparing top notch troops for the worst case scenarios. Master Chief John Urgayle (Viggo Mortensen) is the top dog of the training camp. Take the character of a drill Sgt. & multiple it by 10 & that's what the Master Chief personifies. In fact, he's the ultimate, "G.I. Joe!" And he's not pleased that his training camp is being used for this political shoot out of sorts. So, O'Neil is not welcomed with any respect at all. It's nothing to him for the Navy Seal candidates to undergo 20 hours a day, or more, of obstacle course training, eating fast out of garbage cans stuffing their mouths on the run & writing until the troops are ready to drop out of their seats due to exhaustion. Presumably all that the Master Chief is making the troops endure essential training that will keep them alive in real battle situations. So his job is directing these real life tests. The short of it is that Lt. O'Neil barely hangs in there, even though her Master Sgt. seems to betray her when he beats her bloodied. But, it's clear after that beating his motive was to make a team of the Seal's candidates, the rest of whom found the Sgt's beating disgusting & turned their backs on him. Top Navy brass, in a sexist political contest with Senator Lillian de Haven to keep women out of the military, & at the heart of it, from becoming equal to men, become frantic enough with Lt. O'Neil's perseverance that they take photos of O'Neil fraternizing with other women troops; then, make the photos appear as if the women are behaving as lesbians. Of course, being lesbian would prevent a woman from remaining in the US military because there is an anti-gay ban. Faced with this predicament, O'Neil's got a bigger fight with US politics than she faced in boot camp~
