About this product

Product Information

#1 "New York Times "bestselling author Diana Gabaldon has captivated millions of readers with her critically acclaimed Outlander novels, the inspiration for the Starz original series. From the moment Claire Randall stepped through a standing stone circle and was thrown back in time to the year 1743--and into a world that threatens life, limb, loyalty, heart, soul, and everything else Claire has--readers have been hungry to know everything about this world and its inhabitants, particularly a Scottish soldier named Jamie Fraser. In this beautifully illustrated compendium of all things Outlandish, Gabaldon covers the first four novels of the main series, including: - full synopses of "Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, "and "Drums of Autumn" - a complete listing of the characters (fictional and historical) in the first four novels in the series, as well as family trees and genealogical notes - a comprehensive glossary and pronunciation guide to Gaelic terms and usage - the fully explicated Gabaldon Theory of Time Travel - frequently asked questions to the author and her (sometimes surprising) answers - an annotated bibliography - essays about medicine and magic in the eighteenth century, researching historical fiction, creating characters, and more - professionally cast horoscopes for Jamie and Claire For anyone who wants to spend more time with the Outlander characters and the world they inhabit, Diana Gabaldon here opens a door through the standing stones and offers a guided tour of what lies within.

The best eBay experience I’ve ever had. Communicated with me when I placed the order to let me know when it would be shipped and then again when the item was shipped. The books were packed well and received in two days.

    Perfect book for Outlander fan

This is the perfect book to have if you are a Outlander fan. It has everything from a synopsis of the first few book, to the Gaelic translations. It shows maps and pictures of places and items from the books. My favorite section that I use again and again, is the Cast of Characters section that gives the names and background of all the characters in the books. The family trees and research sections also help answer question many readers form in their minds while reading.

  • Outlander fans will love this !

Fans of the "Outlander" series of historical novels will love this book. Although published in 1999, the background information it contains about the saga of Jamie and Claire Fraser is fascinating and still relevant. A minor problem I encountered while reading the books was the use of foreign language words and phrases; what did they mean, and how were they pronounced? I never studied Latin, and I for sure didn't read or speak Gaelic. I found myself having to stop and try to figure out what they meant based on context, and what kind of significance to the story they represented. I'm happy to report that The "Outlandish Companion" provides this additional information. Yay, Diana! I periodically re-read the books, so the next time I do, I will have the ...

  • The Outlandish Companion by D. Gabaldon

The book (by Diana Gabaldon)provides readers of her "Outlander" series with backstory, references, list of characters -both major and minor ones- family trees, glossary and pronunciation guide to the various languages used etc. It is extremely comprehensive and gives wonderful insight into how Diana Gabaldon both writes and researches. There's a Q&A section with Ms. Gabaldon as well as excerps from her books. Once you start to read the Outlander series, you are immersed in the tale as well as history, so the Companion expands on that. What I 'dislike' about it is that it doesn't cover her book "A Breath of Snow and Ashes," which was published after the Companion. Which means when she issues a second Companion, I'll be purchasing ...

  • All great book series should have one of these!

I resisted Gabaldon's books for the longest time, snobbishly considering myself above the genre they have been placed in for marketing purposes. But, I can say now that they have been among the most entertaining and gratifying books I have ever enjoyed. How delighted I was--four books in-- to discover that the author has written a guide to the inspirations, intricacies, and historical and present-day references found in this incredibly rich series! I hadn't viewed the book before I ordered it on eBay, and I was not disappointed. Gabaldon's voice is friendly and fun, and she writes as if she takes it for granted that her audience is intelligent-- making her a fabulous "companion" indeed. If you are a reader of this series of books, then "The Outlandish ...

  • Book - The Outlandish Companion by Diana Gabaldan

I bought this book because I was so intriqued by the 6 books in the Outlander series that I wanted to know how the author came up with the story. This book gives a synopsis for the first four books and probably should be read after book four. It gives a brief intro into the last two books in the back. This part of the book I scanned but didn't read, having just read all the novels. Along with this there is all sorts of interesting info in this book. Besides how she researched the story and came up with the characters, there are also facts about the 18th century. These include bits about medicine, food, clothing, customs, bits about celtic mucic and how to pronounce Gaelic words, as part of the story takes place in the Scottish Highlands. It also gives you websites and online venues ...
