About this product

Product Information

By the New York Times bestselling author of The Bone Clocks Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize A postmodern visionary and one of the leading voices in twenty-first-century fiction, David Mitchell combines flat-out adventure, a Nabokovian love of puzzles, a keen eye for character, and a taste for mind-bending, philosophical and scientific speculation in the tradition of Umberto Eco, Haruki Murakami, and Philip K. Dick. The result is brilliantly original fiction as profound as it is playful. In this groundbreaking novel, an influential favorite among a new generation of writers, Mitchell explores with daring artistry fundamental questions of reality and identity. Cloud Atlas begins in 1850 with Adam Ewing, an American notary voyaging from the Chatham Isles to his home in California. Along the way, Ewing is befriended by a physician, Dr. Goose, who begins to treat him for a rare species of brain parasite. . . . Abruptly, the action jumps to Belgium in 1931, where Robert Frobisher, a disinherited bisexual composer, contrives his way into the household of an infirm maestro who has a beguiling wife and a nubile daughter. . . . From there we jump to the West Coast in the 1970s and a troubled reporter named Luisa Rey, who stumbles upon a web of corporate greed and murder that threatens to claim her life. . . . And onward, with dazzling virtuosity, to an inglorious present-day England; to a Korean superstate of the near future where neocapitalism has run amok; and, finally, to a postapocalyptic Iron Age Hawaii in the last days of history. But the story doesn't end even there. The narrative then boomerangs back through centuries and space, returning by the same route, in reverse, to its starting point. Along the way, Mitchell reveals how his disparate characters connect, how their fates intertwine, and how their souls drift across time like clouds across the sky. As wild as a videogame, as mysterious as a Zen koan, Cloud Atlas is an unforgettable tour de force that, like its incomparable author, has transcended its cult classic status to become a worldwide phenomenon.

Only directly connected to one of the novellas.

More like several novellas in one book. Connected but not too obvious. Each were interesting and shows the author is very good in different types of material.

  • The two versions of "Cloud Atlas"

The source novel on which the Wachowski film "Cloud Atlas" is based has a different structure and different overall tone than the movie. Instead of being interlaced scene by scene, the six very different, interconnected stories in the book are told first in chronological order, and then later in reverse chronological order, so that the story of Adam Ewing begins and ends the book while the tale of Zachry Bailey is the only one presented as a single piece. The reincarnation theme is limited to a single character in the book and is not connected the same way as in the movie. I honestly consider the movie to be an improvement on the book, because it does connect a lot more characters through the six historical contexts than the book does. The movie is also far more hopeful about whether ...

  • I would give this book a qualified endorsement to the curious reader.

For what it's worth... here is my review: Take 6 stories cut them in half and label them 1-6 A and B. Next, arrange them as follows: 1A-6A, and then 6B -6A. Finally, include a wisp of a thread that seems to connect the 6 stories and that is The Cloud Atlas. A great deal is left to the reader to surmise or imagine and the result is a partially satisfying melange. While I did not appreciate the craftiness of this construction, it was, NTL well written.

  • A great book!

Picked up the book because I thought the movie was good. Haven't finished it yet, but so far it's a great read. The narrative style is unique, the writing is technical and (mostly) fluid. There are times that the dialog is unrealistic, but Mitchell has a couple devices that explain away why it would appear unrealistic. Definitely one of the better contemporary novels I've ever read.

  • book even better than the movie

It is very skillfully written. Interesting that it is written more sequentially than the movie, which jumped from one time to the other. My brother actually found it a lot better than the movie.
