Product Information

In the not so distant future, "Gain Ground" is a popular training game designed to prepare players for battle. Participants must make their way through five rounds reflecting different time periods in history, with each round consisting of ten stages. Of course, players are required to wear authentic battle clothing as they engage the Gain Ground androids trying to defeat them.<br><br>The goal is not only to survive long enough to reach each stage's exit, but ultimately defeat the five "Superdroids" marking the end of each round. While the game was certainly fun for the participants, something went wrong with the central computer controlling it. The Brain, as it was called, suddenly malfunctioned and shut down the simulation, trapping those still left inside. There was also one small change: the androids were now bent on destroying all of the competitors!<br><br>Three fighters have vowed to rescue their comrades and eliminate the Brain: James, Siren and Tonga. All characters have both normal and special weapons, each possessing specific strengths and weaknesses. For instance, some weapons are only effective for reaching high places, low places or certain angles. During the course of the game, you'll be able to rescue 17 different hostages to add to your team.<br><br>Each of these characters will offer new weapons (such as fireballs, spears, grenades, etc.) to help you progress through the stages. The five rounds are as follows: the Dark Ages, the Renaissance, the Golden Age, Present Day, and the Near Future. Having trouble with some areas? Bring along a second player for simultaneous action! Gain Ground is based on Sega's 1989 arcade game of the same name.

    Hidden Treasure

    Gain ground is a somewhat obscure title for the genesis that most people have been rediscovering on the various genesis game compilations. The game has you playing through 5 rounds of various stages in a classic arcade style, and using your various characters to kill enemies, and rescue fallen characters and new characters by bringing them to the stage exit. The game has loads of depth that becomes obvious shortly after you begin playing. The characters all have different properties and weapons, and you need to use them properly for the right situations. Some characters can hit enemies above/below you, others cannot. Some are fast, have long range or even can cause various effects on enemies such as stun.     Gain Ground worth your time!

    Gain Ground is a mix between a shooter, role playing game, and a strategy game. WHen I first bought this game I was disappointed with the overall game play and speed of the characters. As time advanced I found that the speed of game created a large portion of the difficulty. As you advance through the game you have the opportunity to save 30-40 different types of characters all with unique moves and abilities. Collecting members for your Gain Ground team is the best part of this game. When one of your members died, you have an opportunity to save them but if you die a second time, that team member is officially dead. All in All this game is a great addition to any Sega Genesis collection and don't let the arcade port scare you away from this gem. Of course the arcade version is ...
