About this product

Product Information

This popular book has been out of print since 1995 and unavailable for a number of years now, so this [fourth] edition should be a most welcome addition to the market! Greatly expanded from the previous edition (more than 100 pages longer!), this 20th Anniversary Edition contains a long new section on the shipwrecks that have yielded cobs over the years, complete with a foldout map and specified bibliographies for each wreck. Also, the assayer section incorporates the latest research information, with specimen photos of most of the assayers (not separated into a photo section as before). The values in the back, of course, have been updated. What has not changed, however, is the appeal to both beginners and advanced collectors alike, as well as dealers and jewelers who work with cobs. The Practical Book of Cobs offers readers a look at the following topics: Historical background / Elements of design / Market values / Extensive bibliography / Complete ID of mint marks, assayers, and period / How cobs were made and used / Treasure Fleets and other shipwrecks that produced cobs / How to buy and sell, and how to spot counterfeits.

Been in the mines and mint of Potosi Bolivia

I was looking for some history about the cobs because I have been in the 400 year old mines of Potosi Bolivia and the exceptional Mint/Museum down below in the City. It has helped me better understand the history of the several specimens that I got in Potosi and the evolution of the Spanish cobs before the era of the "milled" reales; the latter seen and reported on the Lewis & Clark Expedition. john w. fisher, authority on the Euro-American material culture of the Lewis & Clark Expedition

  • Well written and easy to consume

In addition to being a reference manual. This is a GREAT history book. And what coin collector is not an historian? Many kudos on this book. Well organized, wonderful chart of sunken treasure ships, excellent bibliography.

  • Best available starter info for the Cob collector

A very complete treatment of coins markings, with good photos, in chronological order with excellent info on assayer and a extensive discussion of each mints history. Best possible book for someone just getting into cobs. Well done!

  • The title speaks for itself

This book is a total wealth of information. All kinds of history, excellent black and white photography, covers a wide range of mints, coin designs, if not all of the known varieties; and a map of known shipwrecks and a brief history of each. It's a good buy and a valuable reference.
