In 1969, country icon Johnny Cash set out to repeat the success of the previous year's AT FOLSOM PRISON with another live performance recorded in one of America's most notorious penal institutions, the California State Penitentiary at San Quentin. The concert was filmed for a British television documentary and the attendant album, AT SAN QUENTIN, sold even more copies than its predecessor. It was not the first time Cash had recorded in prison, but this appearance, at a time when American values were being vociferously questioned, suggested the artist's rebelliousness had not dimmed.This DualDisc presents an expanded version of the original concert album with all 31 songs of Cash's performance (13 of which were previously unreleased), as well as the full-length British television documentary and bonus interviews with some of the prisoners and guards who were in attendance at the 1969 concert.

This three-disc set has only one DVD and two CDs, of superior value.
This product review goes more toward the description above than to the product itself. Since the term DVD is used twice, I assumed that all of the discs in the set would be video DVDs. Wrong! Only one of the three discs was a DVD. The other two were compact sound discs. The set was such obvious quality and value at a really excellent price that I didn't complain about the two sound CDs. I was pleased to learn that when I put the CDs into my DVD player, the schedule of tracs came on my TV screen and they played excellently. Bottom line: I would have preferred that the product was accurately described.This product review goes more toward the description above than to the product itself. I can safely say that any positive comment directed towards this album is 100% true. I have this on vinyl also, and this remaster is ten times as great. Just look at the tracklist here, it's practically a live hits album. Included is "I Walk The Line", "Darlin' Companion", "Boy Named Sue", "Peace In The Valley", "Ring Of Fire", and numerous other classics. However, what really makes "At San Quentin" amazing, is the between song chat between Johnny and the prisoners. It adds emotion and humor, and a real look at the kind of man Johnny was. This album alone solidified his status as rebel and legend. Another major plus besides the better sound and extra tracks is the price. This is the no-brainer of no-brainers. In summary, "At San Quentin" is the real Johnny Cash, it's real country, and even ... I can safely say that any positive comment directed towards this album is 100% true. Buy it. Trust me. There's nothing not to love
I bought this because there is simply none like Johnny Cash. I bought the At Folsom Prison Legacy Edition and it seemed only logical to do so for the At San Quentin album. The way the performance sounds is far more spectacular than the previous releases and there is something awesome about getting the full picture of what the entire show sounded like. The opening acts are included and Johnny's entire performance. Music like this only existed once and no longer does unfortunately. This live album would have to be put as my second favorite of all time right behind the original 1968 At Folsom Prison recording. At San Quentin, along with At Folsom Prison, are two of the highest selling albums of all time and even out-sold The Beatles when they were originally released. It marks a historic time ... I bought this because there is simply none like Johnny Cash. I bought the At Folsom Prison Legacy Edition and it seemed only logical to do so for the At San Quentin album.
