DARK PRINCE: THE TRUE STORY OF DRACULA tells the story of Vlad the Impaler--the historical model for Bram Stoker's Dracula. At first, it seems that director Joe Chappelle and screenwriter Tom Baum might have been influenced more by Errol Flynn and THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD than by Bram Stoker. Vlad--like Robin--is a dispossessed noble, and a patriot who fights the occupation forces of the Turks (rather than the evil usurper, King John). Vlad (Rudolph Martin) meets his Maid Marion, Lidia (Jane March) and finds a Little John--the hulking Bruno (Christopher Brand). The King of Hungary (Roger Daltry) becomes Vald's ally and, with his support, Vlad and his men attack the occupying Turks and turncoat Romanian nobles.Then, the movie changes tack, and its mood darkens. Lidia discovers what Vlad does to the bodies of his enemies--and she is horrified. When Lidia has a child, Vlad takes control of the boy, and banishes her to a nunnery. Then, Vlad's brother Radu (Michael Sutton) arrives at the head of a large Turkish invasion force. In the end, DARK PRINCE reveals why and how the historical Vlad acquired his notoriety--and spawned Bram Stoker's Dracula.

    A first time non-fictional TV movie of Vlad Tepes/Dracula/the Impaler. This was on the SyFy Channel 11 years ago at a perfect time in late October before Halloween. And why not? Hollywood released truth/non-fictional historic epics and figures from Braveheart, Gladiator, Troy, Alexander, King Arthur and along comes Dark Prince, (orig. titled; Vlad Dracula: The Dark Prince). I found the Dark Prince to be insightful and informative of Vlad's mythology in contrast to the vampire Dracula films I've seen where Vlad became the heir to his father's throne while defending Romania from the Ottoman Turks, the Sultans, noblemen, and other forces seizing power. Vlad gradually grows darker, more paranoid, and extremely violent. Wikipedia got one thing wrong. The movie has Vlad getting killed while ...

    Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula (2002, DVD)

    I saw this movie once when it was first released and fell in love with it. The only drawback was there were only so many copies made before it was discontinued! It took me 3 times bidding on it until I finally won a copy! This movie is unlike any other Dracula movie since it deals with the life of Prince Vlad Tepes Dracul(Dracula) also known as Vlad The Impaler. His life was the basis for Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. If you have knowledge of, or are familiar with the many myths surrounding Dracula and vampires you will notice this movie touches on how they came to be. I think everyone should see it at least once.     The True Story of Dracula

    I bought this movie for my husband. He saw it on tv and has been looking for it ever since. It is the true story of how Dracula actually came about and the events regarding the real Dracula. Of course, as always the tales have changed over the telling and that is where they get the vampire Dracula from. Would recommend this to anyone who loves to learn about the real beginning of events, especially concerning Vampires.
