If you like New Jack Swing, HELP yourself with this one
Timmy Gatling was an original member of Guy, who soon left when their debut album was released to pursue his own career due to "creative differences" as they say. HELP is his only album, while he went on to produce acts such as Bell Biv DeVoe, Le Gent, and Christopher Williams. This album has a good start with Cheatin', a solid New Jack Track with a rap in it, yet it does not give away the best track so soon. Help (great keyboard solo in the middle) and Rock Me Good (mid-tempo bliss) are the main tracks, which were also made as singles you should get a hold of. Concentrate On You and Whatcha' Gonna do are other great uptempo cuts. However, Misdemeanor made me cringe. While forcing myself to listen to it, I imagined that it would be good if the tempo was slower along with ... So For Real, All They Way, and The Sweat Drops are the slow jams, and they're quite pleasant! All The Way is especially real smooth, with a simple but catchy melody, and vocal help from Audrey Wheeler. The Sweat Drops, featuring Keith Sweat, is at least as good, but it comes with flaws. Timmy Gatling tries to sing (and he knows how it should be done), but he just can't hit the notes well. Keith Sweat's verse at the end wasn't all that great, either. Well, it would've been had he not sounded so nervous. Otherwise, Timmy Gatling's vocals are EXTREMELY mediocre (which is why he no longer produced for himself), yet tolerable thanks to his producting skills (which equate with his solo endeavors). Despite HELP's flaws, it's a must-own for New Jack Swing fans.
