About this product

Product Information

"Oh, the game was very different in my day from what it's like today. I don't mean just that the fences were further back and the ball was deader and things like that. I mean it was more fun to play ball then." - Davy Jones First published in 1966, The Glory of Their Times is a universally hailed classic. A loving look back at the way baseball used to be, and the legends who played the game--immortals like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and many others--it's a delightfully evocative work full of fascinating characters and wonderful anecdotes. This is also the story of author Lawrence S. Ritter's six year quest to find the heroes of a bygone era. He interviewed more than two dozen players from the turn of the century and the decades shortly thereafter, including many now in the Baseball Hall of Fame, then let them tell their own stories, in their own words. The scorecard includes Rube Marquard, Chief Meyers, Goose Goslin, Smoky Joe Wood, Wahoo Sam Crawford, and many more. This new audio compilation of the original interviews is great news for baseball fans and anyone who loves old-time tales of America's national pastime.

  • Step back in time by the memories of those who played with Cobb & Wagner.

This CD set provides an excellent collection of interviews from baseball legends of a far gone era. Ritter draws out these legendary individuals in ways that give the audience a compelling account of their struggles and triumphs during a time when ballplayers were not first class celebrities; and it allows the listeners to step back into this time with clear (if diverse and many faceted) eyewitness testimonials of life on and off the playing field, whence one mingles through these personal accounts with legends such as Cobb and Wagner.

  • Great oral baseball history

Fantastic to hear old ( now deceased ) ball players talk about old time baseball & how it actually was back then.

  • Maybe the best of the lot.

My first impression was total amazement that we were listening to people who were playing professional baseball in the 1890's. I don't know how any baseball fan could keep from hanging on every word. It's fascinating to compare the similarities and differences of the game so many of us love. Back then the players were more like vagabonds, the salaries were minimal, transportation and accommodations weren't any better. Pitchers put shoe polish, and roughed up the baseballs which were kept in play for 3 days or more. If an ump tried to put a new ball in play, the old one would re-appear as it went around the horn. Most games were about 1 1/2 hours long. I've listened to a lot of baseball audio books and this is probably my very favorite. It's filled with sad, funny, and interesting ...

  • Nice addition to the book

Very interesting to hear the interviews.
