    Arkady is back once more...

    Once I read Gorky Park, I was compelled to see if Martin Cruz Smith had written any other Arkady Renko books; the Hollywood movie left about half the story out. I was happy to learn there are 8 more in the series. After reading "The Polar Star" I was definitely hooked. The Russian inspector has an infectious wit and dry humor that draws the reader into the cold, cruel, and inane world of everyday Soviet life. Mr. Smith is known for his in-depth research into Russian norms and realities that we as Americans take for granted. The character development of each player in the story is as good as it gets, and of course, there is the usual amount of gory forensic details that all police are inured to. I'll have to order the next one soon.
