Victor Hugo's classic story of freedom vs revenge.
"Les Miserables," was written in 1862. And is a novel by French author Victor Hugo, and is considered one of the best of the 19th century, because it describes in detail the lives of the wretched poor people (Les Miserables) during the period around 1815. It follows the lives and interactions of several French characters over a twenty year period in the early 19th century, starting in the year of Napoleon's final defeat. However, the story begins when the then young peasant Jean Valjean (Richard Anson Jordan (1937-1993) was captured and sent to prison for five years for stealing a loaf of bread. This is where he meets the harsh and cruel police commissoner; Monsieur DeMasi Anthony Perkins (1932-1992). Valjean attempts to escape, and DeMasi adds another five more years to Valjean's ... "Les Miserables," was written in 1862. And is a novel by French author Victor Hugo, and is considered one of the best of the 19th century, because it describes in detail the lives of the wretched poor people (Les Miserables) during the period around 1815. It follows the lives and interactions of several French characters over a twenty year period in the early 19th century, starting in the year of Napoleon's final defeat. I think I should stop and not give away all of the story. And let others see the DVD for themselves. I highly recommend this DVD or even the book be read. It is full of excitement and intrigue. Further, it provides how good and evil existed in France back in the 19th century and how politics played a major part on how the "Les Miserables" were treated. And how the rich treated the poor. Furthermore, Victor Hugo shows us the true history of France back in the 19th century and just gives us a peek of what caused the French Revolution years before.

While it deviates from the book and musical dramatically (in leaving out the major character Eponine, among other things) the message is still loud and clear, although I wouldn't have personally described Javert as 'seeking revenge'. Seeking justice, maybe, but 'revenge' makes me think of it as a personal spat between Javert and Valjean, when in my mind it's really just that Javert is wholly and completely devoted to the Law and making sure Valjean is given the punishment he deserves. But I digress. A SIMPLY GREAT MOVIE
I love this book and all the complex characters and the meaning of good and evil and taking matters in your control and becoming a better person against all odds. This particular version is more true to the story and really liked the acting of the police officer who was so determined to catch Val Jean. It was clean and little violence and I could enjoy it, plus it has suspense. I also bought the newer version with Liam Neesom and it is a different slant on the story. But this older movie I liked the best..I would buy this movie again in a heartbeat.
