Better Than The UA Collection
This review is for the Bear Family Records 1993 issue of these paired Lp releases from Gordon: This single CD contains "Did She Mention My Name" and "Back Here On Earth" plus one of the takes of "Spin, Spin." Despite these recordings being AAD remasters, the sound on these reissue / remasters is actually quite good and does an nice job of recreating the mix of the original Lps. (These were sourced from 4-track masters and not more rudimentary original instrument tracks which are probably long since lost). The most noticeable thing to my ears for these Bear Family remasters (not originally issued in the United States) is a much more fullness of sound compared to the The United Artists Collection (TUAC), also issed in 1993 (and the common compilation available in the US). The bass instrument is much more apparent on these (Bear Family) recordings and helps to create a more natural sound compared to the somewhat more "smaller" or subdued recordings /remasters issued on the TUAC Lp / CD. Also, a number of tracks on TUAC are occassionally truncated removing longer intros. This, in my estimation, makes those truncated tunes a bit "less musical" perhaps in an attempt to make them more compact and commercial for a US audience that UA possibly assumed would require a shorter attention span. The more complete versions included here on the Bear Family issues are much more of a pleasure to listen to and in a way, help to showcase Gordon's musical ideas and talent event more. Lastly, of the 17 or so takes of "Spin, Spin" that are known, one of them is added here after the last (Lp) track. A note, however, this recording of "Spin, Spin" here does not appear to be sourced from an original tape source and may even be from only a 2-track source. The recording here is also mono (not stereo) and is not of "first quality" as the other tracks on this disc. So, while "Spin, Spin" is a nice add-on to ths 2 Lp collection, there still remains no first-rate quality recording of this tune available. All-in-all, these Bear Family recordings are a nice addition to Gordon's CD catalog and do offer a better listening experience. For music and recording officianados like myself, I would prefer these recording over the United Artists CD releases. For this CD: Two thumbs up!
