The Pertinence of Austen
Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey is as pertinent today as it was when she wrote it. The intrigue, superficiality, everyday struggles, coming of age, romance, and difficulty navigating society that Austen always portrayed with her sarcastic humor come to life in a new way in this film adaptation. The acting is superb and believable. You feel like you are there in the film. There is a great deal of energy in this film that wraps you up and keeps you on the edge of your seat (if you're a true Austen fan). Like all of Austen's women, the main character here is flawed. Her flaws are just a little more simplistic and in your face than some of Austen's other women. As always, though, the true heroine (love) wins out. The journey is interesting and captivating and well worth ... Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey is as pertinent today as it was when she wrote it. Everything about this production is pure joy!
Of all Jane Austen's delightful novels, this has perhaps the simplest plot and one of the loveliest settings. (It's always a joy to be in Bath.) The characters are delightful, and at least one of the villains is wonderfully and unintentionally funny. The movie version provides an additional attraction in that the two main actors are warm and lovable.

A wonderful Jane Austen work. The actors are very good in making you believe. The sets and costumes are also excellent. Masterpiece Theatre is a better production than the old BBC version.
