"Bret Easton Ellis is a very, very good writer [and] American Psycho is a beautifully controlled, careful, important novel.... The novelist's function is to keep a running tag on the progress of culture; and he's done it brilliantly.... A seminal book." --Fay Weldon, The Washington Post "A masterful satire and a ferocious, hilarious, ambitious, inspiring piece of writing, which has large elements of Jane Austen at her vitriolic best. An important book." --Katherine Dunn, bestselling author of Geek Love "A great novel. What Emerson said about genius, that it's the return of one's rejected thoughts with an alienated majesty, holds true for American Psycho .... There is a fever to the life of this book that is, in my reading, unknown in American literature." --Michael Tolkin "The first novel to come along in years that takes on deep and Dostoyevskian themes.... [Ellis] is showing older authors where the hands come to on the clock." --Norman Mailer, Vanity Fair, "Bret Easton Ellis is a very, very good writer [and]American Psychois a beautifully controlled, careful, important novel…. Just as relevant today as in the 80s

Oh yes, psychopathy/sociopathy is thriving in the USA. Deja vu, the soulless yuppies depicted in this book have lately been overrun by rebel flag waving rednecks, but whether 1% or not, the general mood is the same - sneer at the homeless, worship Trump, and spend outrageous amounts of money in order to feel good about yourself. Seeing as people routinely get away with murder (and worse crimes against humanity) these days, it doesn't seem that much is changed. The dreary obsessive descriptions of what everybody is wearing gets really old, but if we mentally replace that with an obsession with technology and what brand gadget everyone is holding, its a pretty seamless transition between then and now - we definitely value stuff over people.

  • Top critical review

There is some merit, but lacks any humor to it's darkness

The novel itself feels too long and while it is well written, I at most found it entertaining, it never felt like a dark comedy or even gallows humor. When it is dark, it's just that. I find it far too sinister to be funny. The parts that could be funny are repeated so much that they become tedious. But the way Ellis writes makes up for this, greatly. I don't feel as if Patrick Bateman becomes and interesting character until serious mental cracks begin to show. But, all in all, the novel's ending is far better than it's beginning, however lacking the humor may be.

  • Some of the character names are different, reads like a director's extended cut, and I too believe Bono is the devil.

Book is better than the movie

  • I need to return some videotapes

The story was set in the mid-1980s, but it could just as easily be set it our modern era, minus Ronald Reagan. Very interesting how many times Trump was mentioned. After reading this book you might gain an appreciation of your local financial psycho. Just remember not to visit him at his swank, postmodernist condo.
