Dated splendour
This is a film that I suppose has to be judged according to its vintage. It was no doubt a knockout in its day, and still has considerable merit. There is some fine choreography and excellent dancing, not to mention the outstanding 4K restoration, which makes the whole thing shine. What would otherwise deserve 5 stars is unfortunately undermined by the very artificial, theatrical style of acting that was so much part of its time. Apart from Moira Shearer, the other characters are more like caricatures than real people, so that the rather childish overacting leaves the film looking very dated.This is a film that I suppose has to be judged according to its vintage.
