About this product

Product Information

THE GOLDEN COMPASS is an adaptation of the first book in the beloved but controversial fantasy series by Phillip Pullman. The story opens with Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) an orphan girl who lives in an alternate world that is similar to earth, but where people's souls exist outside of their bodies in animal form. The people are ruled by a shadowy and oppressive council known as the Magisterium, which is doing it's best to keep everyone from getting information about what is called "Dust." Lyra's Uncle Asriel (Daniel Craig) has been researching Dust, and he has seen to it that Lyra is given safe shelter at Jordan College. But when the visiting Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman) arrives, she asks Lyra to accompany her on a trip to the North to meet the Panserbjorne, a race of armored bears. Before Lyra leaves, the Headmaster gives her a golden compass, a device which only she can read, and from which she can intuit the truth. Lyra leaves with Mrs. Coulter, but when she learns that her friends have been kidnapped by "Gobblers," she heads out to find them, and soon joins forces with the nomadic Gyptians, some witches, and an armored bear called Iorek Byrnison (voice by Ian McKellen). Lyra finds her friends, and so discovers the evil plans the Magisterium has cooked up for the world's children. By the film's end, she has vowed to track down her Uncle Asriel, and to discover the true power of Dust.Hollywood had a tricky time of taming this tale, as Pullman's books portray religion - the Catholic Church in particular - in a less than flattering light. The film version carefully steers clear of these themes, and instead puts its enormous budget into creating visually stunning effects. While fans of the books may find fault with this streamlined version, children are sure to revel in the many talking animals and whimsical airships.

  • Golden Compass movie

I had heard a lot of hype about this movie when it first came out and purchased the DVD (cheaper than seeing the movie). I am a Christian, so was a bit reluctant to watch another Christian bashing movie, but I honestly did not see that. What I did see was a criticism of authoritarian governments, aiken to Gallileo being tried for heresy. As for the witchcraft and magic, it was on a par with Harry Potter. There were some good scenes, but it was your typical prequel movie, where you are strung along waitng for a final tie up and only end up with what amounts to a commercial within the movie to come watch the next movie, which was very disapointing and somewhat of a rip off. The air scenes and use of glowing power source in the carriages verses the use of horses was very interesting and there ...

  • The Golden Compass, Looks like a NEW Trilogy "I Hope".

The Golden Compass, I really liked this movie with the parallel universe theme. You will enjoy the companians each character has with out giving it away thats all I will say about that. There is also the issue of the Catholic Church that was brought up when this movie first came out which I don't see. Yes there is a power in the story that is against the people seeking other worlds and I imagine that could be compared to the Church but we must remember it is a movie and if you have Faith in something this can not change that. All in All I really enjoyed the storyline but it left you hanging in the end so this is why I think this may be a Trilogy.

  • The Golden Compass....

... needs a compass to let the mainstream viewer know what is going on! The storyline is so complicated that it was hard to sit through the film. It is confusing and a viewer should have been told that reading the book is necessary before viewing the film! The film doesn't explain what is going on very well. The CGI has good effects, the actors are basically well cast, the voice actors for the CGI animals are fantastic.... but the storyline lacks cohesiveness! Not recommended for mainstream viewing. Not recommended for small children... Tina gives it a 'poor' eBay rating, I'm giving a 'poor' eBay rating, and my youngest son gives a 'Below Average' rating! ~Michael

  • Loved the Armored Bears!!!

Here we have tangible evidence we should not let any special interest dictate what we should or should not watch. This film is a delight for children and adults as well. I shudder to think there are people out there who would find anything offensive with this film as it is overflowing with heartwarming attributes. The visuals are astounding. The storyline is original, highly controversial (or at least in the mind of some religious groups). Maybe even more amazing to me than how good this film is, is the high volume of criticism and low ratings I have seen. It might be a case of not appreciating the complexity of the story. You can't just jump into this film and immediately know what's going on. You have to exert a little effort & brain power to work your way into this alternate universe ...

  • The Golden Compass (2008, DVD)

Decided to buy it because I enjoy fantasy & magical movies, however, this was a disappointment. It was built up as being so great and fantastic, it's no where near some of the movies before it. The animal effects were great, but the story line is weak, I lost interest after the first 20 minutes. As for it being a treat to God and religion as we have heard it to be, there is not a thing to be concerned about. This movie can never top "MOSES", the story of Moses was extraordinary in drama, special effects and love. The Golden Compass could never compare. Not worth the money or time. Forget about this one.
