About this product

Product Information

Mel Gibson is Porter, a ruthless criminal, who is gunned down by his wife and friend after they rob an Asian gang. When Porter survives the attack, he makes it his mission to exact revenge on his friend, who has used the robbery money to buy his way into a powerful syndicate. Added to the mix are crooked police officers, members of the syndicate, and the Asian gang, who are out for a bit of revenge themselves. Based on the series of novels by Donald E. Westlake, which were translated to the screen previously in John Boorman's POINT BLANK (1967).

Not as entertaining as the original

I've always the "Payback" movie ... it was one of the first Blu-ray movies I bought ... but, in my opinion, the original movie is better entertainment ... the plot with Kris Kristofferson as Bronson is much more entertaining than the ending on the train station ...

  • Straight-Up is different.

Payback Straight Up is very different than the original. Entire scenes have been cut and new ones added. The extraordinary opening minutes of the original have been changed. Gone are Porter's voice-over and the distinctive music score. Characters such as the alcoholic doctor have been eliminated. The Bronson character (played by Kris Kristofferson) has become a voice on a telephone. The ending is absolutely new. I don't know how they could have edited in additional scenes a decade later unless they originally shot two movies. Is the new version superior? I would just say that it's shorter and leaner and has fewer flaws. But it lacks much of the humor and quirkiness of the original. If you're a film buff I would recommend owning both.

  • What Happened?

Just saw the Director's Cut: bull! They must have paid a lot of money to the director to allow them to butcher and completely change his work like this. As one reviewer said basically: gone is the humor and quirkiness of the original--the music score is completely gone--the story is completely gone and it is not nearly as engaging as the original. I had no trouble discerning from the original that all Gibson's character, Porter wanted was his 70,000 back--that was part of the humor of the original story--and it came out that way. In the DC version it is flat and the humor is lost. I could go on and on about this so-called director's cut, but to sum it all up: it is disgusting what money people can do to someone's work--and that is what this new version is all about, ultimately, is money!

  • Payback: the straight up politics of movie-making today

This movie is a director's cut version. After watching this version, a lot of the movie makes sense. In short, the characters are well developed and motives are described in detail. One can finally understand how Porter thinks and what makes him pursue the principle of the mission is not the money, but a quest to recover what was taken be it $70k or $130k. It features a story that makes sense if you're looking for a gritty, Charlie Varick or Bullet genre flick. Because the dog is shot and killed and the extreme violence toward women; the current day, politically correct studio was pressured to fire the director and remake most of the story on film to what is known as the theatrical version. My impression of the movie makes me wonder if a time capsule of the 1970s were open ...

  • Amazing neo-noir crime film

This movie “Payback” the directors cut is epic. If you seen the original 1999 Payback, this one is better. The scenes in this director’s cut have more violence, grittier dialogue, and a nicer ending. Here’s a detail about this movie. Payback is a neo-noir action movie. It’s about a thief that got backstabbed by his own wife and crime partner who shot him and left him for dead after a heist job. The thief recovers to get revenge and gets what’s owed to him.
