  • An also ran

Noted firearms antiquary R.L. Wilson and others had high hopes for this film. It received nation wide release in the U.S. and some publicity, but never really seemed to deliver. The story of the film is simple: some modern day hunters go to Africa with one of Teddy Roosevelt's historic rifles in tow. Its also a rite of passage for the young men in the party, one of which is a descedant of Roosevelt. The film was made by the same director who made "Pumping Iron" that put Arnold Schwarzenegger on the map. So there are some professional bits of production values, but the impression the whole thing gives is that it was improvised, and not very well. People seem to be uncomfortable and not very confident, as if they were shooting on an impossibly tight schedule. After some desultory ...

  • On of the most important hunting movies ever made

I have hunted Africa several times, AND I have handled the "star" of this film the Holland & Holland double rifle used by President Roosevelt on his 1909 safari. This is without doubt the most famous and ost valuable rifle in the world: a physical connection to the man and his times. "In the Blood" is the story of the rifle's resurrection and its use by TR's great-great-great grandson. It explores the feelings of hunters and their connection to their prey in a way no other film I have ever seen does. As one reviewer noted, it's not full of "kill shots" and in some ways it's not a bout hunting but about HUNTERS and the way they see the world. Those who object to hunting won't like it because it isn't critical. It isn't laudatory, either: it shows hunters and hunting as they are. We ...

  • Not too much blood

If you have hunted Africa or read African game trails, this is a Must See movie. Hunting with TR's original double? That alone is worth the price of the DVD. If you like hunting movies with a lot of kill shots, this might not be the flick for you.
