  • Unusual and baffling mystery written by a young woman who loves mysteries.

Gene Wolfe is an excellent storyteller. He ropes you in and doesn't let go until the last page. This book is not strictly sci-fi or even fantasy -- instead it's a baffling mystery with an engaging detective (I'm a criminologist) named Blue who helps unravel an unusual crime. Wolfe surprises while playing fair, giving plenty of information and clues, all of which turn out to have been accurate, but the culprit and means are hard to guess. Holly Hollander, the narrator and main character, is a scrappy teenage mystery enthusiast who takes Blue as a mentor of sorts, and helps him gather information to disqualify several promising suspects. One reviewer commented that he for one would be happy for Holly to write all Wolfe's novels.
