Gone to Texas is basically the story of Sam Houston before and during the Texas Revolution. It kept this viewer riveted, more so when Sam finally got to Texas after his brief and bizarre marriage in Tennessee and time hanging out with the Native Americans. The usual players showed up for this, including Bowie and Travis, the former as a buddy of Houston, which he was, and the latter as an instigator of revolt, which he was. The scene that stuck with me more than anything else was Santa Anna at the Alamo. Probably because of the expense involved in showing that battle (you have to pay out lots of pesos for all those troops) and because Houston wasn't there, the film skips the battle and goes straight to the extremely gory aftermath. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever get Santa Anna ... Gone to Texas is basically the story of Sam Houston before and during the Texas Revolution. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever get Santa Anna staring as Joe (Col. Travis' slave) pulls Travis, next to his cannon and still holding his bloody sword, up by his hair and identifies the dead commander for the Mexican leader. Gruesome--and the same was done for Crockett and Bowie, although not quite as awful. San Jacinto was certainly more upbeat, and, while it didn't "make it all better, at least the good guys won in the end (I make no apologies to the PC crowd for that statement). All in all, very entertaining for folks who like that kind of thing.
