There Are 8 Million Stories In The Naked City And This Is One Of Them
"The Naked City" is, basically, a NYC, narrated, police procedural docudrama concerning a sensational murder of a beautiful woman. It explores all the intricacies of finding a murderer in a sprawling, city of eight million people. Dogged, detective legwork and a big dash of luck seems to do the job. This movie is well done and very entertaining as well. The actors are great in their roles and the director is top-notch. I can recommend this one to all, serious movie buffs. As narrator/producer Mark Hellinger sets the scene, massive concrete and glass towers of Manhattan gleam in the sunlight below. The opening aerial shot of 1948 NYC is alone worth the price of the Criterion DVD. Shot by famed cinematographer, William Daniels and directed by the soon-to-be Hollywood black-listed, Jules Dassin, THE NAKED CITY turns out to be nothing more than a rather pedestrian police procedural. It seems Dassin, a genuine former Communist Party member, shot an entirely different film than the one the studio released. Dassin's original film was a commentary on crime and capitalism, depicting the effects of both on the sidewalks and in the penthouses of New York City. "There ... Starring Barry Fitzgerald, Howard Duff, Dorothy Hart, Don Taylor and Ted de Corsia. The Criterion Collection edtion includes a newly restored high-definition digital transfer, (a rather muddy) monaural soundtrack, commentary by screenwriter Malvin Wald, analysis of the film’s New York locations by Celluloid Skyline author James Sanders, new video interview with NYU film professor Dana Polan -- plus footage of Jules Dassin from his 2004 appearance at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art,a stills gallery, an essay by Luc Sante and original production notes given to Dassin by producer Mark Hellinger.

PLOT: a the murder of a dead girl leads to stolen jewelry. in GLORIOUS black and white....the heat of the big apple New York City has TWO men..STRANGLE a woman and to make sure they do the job right they drowned her in her own bathtub. EITHER was also used to "subdue" the girl... Cops Barry Fitzgerald and Taylor find the "victim" JEAN...had lots of "boy friends" including Howard Duff...Duff is living way beyond his means and supports himself with selling stolen jewelry. When his "cover" falls apart...the next lead is his gullible fiancée Ruth....who is wearing one of his stolen rings...the next ZIG and ZAG...one of the two "killers" ends up floating in the East River....when a clue of "either" (USED to kill Jean) is tracked ... This is excellent but you have to "pay" attention. WE see the heat of the big city in summer and the cop (TAYLOR) who wears out his shoes to find clues from Jewelers and Pawns to piece the final puzzle pieces of the crime and why. EXCELLENT....Duff is outstanding as the "liar/ heel" lover who is clearly out for #1..himself....also good is the final chase scene with the killer who lives to look at himself in a mirror....great noir gem. 5 STARS all the way.
