The description did say marks and wear, tho it didn't say discoloration. I failed to look at the pictures. That's on me, not the seller. There was no attempted deception on their part. Just alright - 1996 VHS The War of the Worlds
Everyone knows the classic 1953 movie and either loves it (as I do) or just don't get what all the buzz is about (sorry... I guess you had to be there). This review is not about the movie, but the quality of this original 1996 VHS release (the one with the photo -- not the painting --of the two Martian war machines on the cover). I only bought this because I was so disappointed in the last two DVDs of this film (released in 2003 and the special "collectors" edition released in 2005). The latest DVDs of this classic are great in many ways -- they have used the digital tech to improve the clarity, brightness and contrast and make that stuff uniform across the entire film. Unfortunately, they played with the digitization too much -- to the point where the wires that were used to make the ... The latest DVDs of this classic are great in many ways -- they have used the digital tech to improve the clarity, brightness and contrast and make that stuff uniform across the entire film. Unfortunately, they played with the digitization too much -- to the point where the wires that were used to make the Martian war ships fly are super-visible in *every single shot* throughout the movie. I mean, really visible... 8 solid black lines supporting each ship. They didn't have computer graphics in 1953 when this film was released, they had no choice but to use wires. But they were pretty skillful about hiding them with smoke and background colors. Yes, even in the original on the big screen you could see a wire or two in a couple of the shots, but not often enough to ruin the illusion. But in the most recent DVDs, the wires have been brought out by the digitization to the point where it really does ruin the film (at least for me). So I thought I'd try the VHS made in 1996 (two years before the first DVD of this film was created). OK, now I'm back to only being able to see the one or two wires in a couple of shots. Great. Unfortunately, Paramount used a really crappy print of the film when they made this VHS. The first 20 minutes have quite a bit of dust and a some scratching (it clears up after the first 20 minutes). It's not horrible, but there was no reason they couldn't have used a cleaner print. The real disappointment with this VHS is that the quality of the transfer from film to video tape was very poor -- overall it is *way* too dark. It's not that I've been spoiled by the digitized lightness of being in the recent DVDs. I've watched this film in the theaters on the big screen a lot of times and the original Technicolor film print is not dark and muddy like this VHS is. There is no excuse for Paramount to have failed to do a high quality transfer. So, looks like I'm going to have to digitize a backup copy this VHS (for my own personal use, of course) and try to create a version I can watch which is not dark and muddy but also does not reveal all the wires -- just the way the gorgeous Technicolor film looked in the theaters. It doesn't seem like a lot of ask for in this day and age, but it looks like I'll have to do it myself. Typical.

Better than the second one.
I am sure most audiences that are under 30 wont ever know this title or look for it. You had to grow up with it and be a big fan of sci fi and horror movie classics including THEM, THE MANTIS, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, THE FORBIDDEN PLANET, THE LAST MAN ALIVE, INVISIBLE INVADERS, OMEGA MAN AND SOYLENT GREEN. I saw the new spielberg movie and while frightening, it just cant match the original. There was a true sense of naivete in the fact that people in 1950's culture were cold war ready and an attack from outerspace was the last thing they were considering. My favorite sentence in that movie was after they "A" bombed the alien ship clusters because that was the most powerful thing they had at the time, the commander said, "bombs,tanks,planes,missles, they are all like toys against ... The special effects for a 1953 movie. I know they were not on legs and walking like the book and the terrible remake but the over all effects of hovering crafts that looked like our idea of a UFO gave the movie more credence. How they cut in scenes of military operations was a little fake but, for 1953 still well done. This movie along with many more Sci-Fi from the 50's era is well worth viewing. You will enjoy this movie then compare it to the blood and gore of the remake.The special effects for a 1953 movie. I like this move but was kinda sad coz i thought it was the onld one. it works have watched it 5 times. it is a good one coz it has Tom Cruize. thanks. I will buy more from them
