    The late, great, i7-4790 CPU

The 3rd and 4 generation Intel i7's are great cpu's. I bought my first computer in 1980 running a Z80, my first IBM compatible in 1983, and kept upgrading every couple years after that. But I knew when I bought my first i7-3770 in 2012 that I had finally got a chip that had all the power I would ever need. This i7-4790 is at the top of that production run. The only bottleneck I still have is the SSD. I've got a Samsung 970 500GB M.2 NVMe running now off the PCIe 3.0 x4 slot as a data drive at 3350 and 3100 GB/s read/write and am working on getting it to act as my boot drive as well. Then my 4790 machine will be perfect.

  • Great upgrade component

Replaced my i5 4460 with this. Works great in my dinky h81 mobo since RAM costs so much it was worth it for me. Slight increase in gaming fps paired with an AMD r390x (rebadged and OC'd 290), but noticeable bump in video transcoding with handbrake and virtualization. For comparison's sake this processor (non-K) is a bit superior to a stock ryzen 2400G, but falls short of stock ryzen 1600/2600s. Major caveat is this is a haswell refresh chip from 2014 with limited upgrade paths, so choose wisely.

  • Best performance for price in this generation of intel cpu

This processor is a great upgrade for any. Gaming build with budget in mind, the performance difference with newer generation Intel cpu's is minimal . Most people won't be able to even tell in real life usage. Only benchmark scores will show the difference.

  • Yesterday's high end that competes with today's mid-range

Upgraded a family member's i3-4160 to this i7-4790. Double the cpu performance, no issues, in her socket 1150 board.
