So smooth to the ears
Excellent collection of one of the best vocal groups ever. The group wasn’t one dimensional in their music. Over the years, they did it all. You like some good R&B? You got it. Or maybe a bit of jazz? Hey, got a bunch of that too, with a little help from Mr. Louis Armstrong and Lady Ella Fitzgerald. And if you want to hear some of the best scatting ever? Just check out their rendition of “Tiger Rag”. It’ll blow you away. And how about some folksy stuff? Sit back and listen to them do Hoagy Carmichael’s “Ole Rockin' Chair”. There's plenty of smooth listening, barbershop quartet style works, spicy South of The Border flavorings, slow and easy going soul, lots of straight pop. It's all here. One of the really neat (if I may use that term) things about the group was the use, or lack thereof, of musical instruments in a lot of their earlier work. After school, they would pick up some spending money by street performing outside of their father's barbershop. The only thing in the way of a musical instrument was a Kazoo that Harry played. Later on, they entered an amateur contest at the local opera house and were already on stage when Harry discovered that he didn’t have the Kazoo with him. Not one to give up, he improvised by cupping his hands to his mouth and imitated a trumpet. It was big hit, and the brothers started working on how to imitate different musical instruments that they heard on the radio. John, sang bass and would imitate a tuba. Harry was a baritone and imitated a trumpet. Herbert did a second trumpet. Donald did a trombone. They became so good at it, that they found themselves in high demand in the area. It even carried over into their early recording career and their Brunswick and later on their early Decca labels carried the statement “No musical instruments or mechanical devices used on this recording other than one guitar”. It's a real challenge to try and tell when they are imitating instruments and when they aren't. The collection makes for some of the better listening around. The sound recording quality was very good, even on the 1930/1940 renditions. Very enjoyable listening. Disc "1" has more variety in styles while disc "2" has more standards of the day. Highly recommend it to everyone who appreciates music as it was and wishes it could be that way again.
