Surges happen all the time. Some ruin your precious equipment.
Best insurance policy I ever bought to protect my solid state relays and other sensitive circuitry from voltage and current surges that happen all the time, and sometimes your stuff gets ruined. This is a metal oxide varistor, which means that if the voltage goes beyond an established limit, it becomes like a dead short across a solid state relay (or what ever else you put it across), redirecting or "dropping" over voltage across the MOV, instead of your valuable piece of equipment. It's cheap.
