Brainville: Hugh Hopper (bass); Pip Pyle (drums); Daevid Allen, Kramer. Recording information: Knitnoise Studios, New York, NY (09/1998-03/1999). Photographer: Macioce. Brainville is a quartet pairing two generations of psychedelic musicians. Hugh Hopper was the bass player for Soft Machine. Guitarist Daevid Allen was instrumental in the formation of said group, playing with Soft Machine briefly before pursuing a course with his own ensemble, Gong. Keyboardist/producer Kramer and drummer Pip Pyle fell under the spell of the so-called "Canterbury Band" movement that Hopper and Allen were so pivotal in defining. Together, the elder and younger musicians create texturally rich and alluring songscapes, with Allen's vocals and lyrics adding a layer of magic and mystery. There's a well-developed sense of interplay, as all of the participants had played together in various other pairings prior to this union. Tape effects and loops drift in and out of the songs, adding a cinematic element to the album. Not surprisingly, THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE is dedicated to the memory of director Stanley Kubrick, then recently deceased.
